Smooth, Easy Drinking, Sweet Blanco

From TequilaGringo: We just had a tasting of this very expensive, ultra high-end tequila, and we liked it!  The nose has some vegetal hints, and very little burn.  Initial taste was vegetal, with prominent sweet agave.  As the taste progressed, it became a sweet pear and it kept getting sweeter, until the finish which was almost sugary.  It has a silky, velvety mouthfeel that makes it highly drinkable - you roll this bottle out with the ladies and you're all gonna be in the tank in no time.  It's incredibly easy-drinking, super low heat, very very smooth.  Read more »

A Very Floral Blanco, Easy Drinking

From TequilaGringo: The nose was a sweet agave with floral notes, a pretty big nose but not too warm.  Thin, easy legs and a watery/silky mouthfeel.  The taste is immediately floral, medium heat and a longish finish that stay floral until the end when a bit of aged, baked agave comes in. Easy, Grassy Agave Tasting Blanco

From TequilaGringo: This tequila brought a nice, medium agave on the nose.  A little floral, a little grassy, but mostly agave.  We liked the smell.  Mouthfeel was oily, and the legs were thick.  The taste was a very easy, grassy agave with low heat and a slight black pepper note.  A very fine tequila - we really liked this one a lot.  And for $33 - it's a fantastic value and we wouldn't hesitate to put it into a marg if we felt like treating ourselves.

A 100 proof tequila you can actually drink!

From TequilaGringo: It's not every day you come across a 100 proof tequila, so we were pretty excited to give this one a sip.  We were also a bit apprehensive though, because 100 proof is, well, it's 100 proof - and that can mean it's going to bring the pain.  But that's not what happened at all.  It's of course warmer than a typical tequila, that's to be expected - but this is no badge of honor-wince-and-get-it-over-with juice.  I'm sure many will try it because they're looking to get sauced, heck it'll probably be a party thing for most.  But in reality it's more than that. The nose has a bit of alcohol, but is largely agave.  The mouthfeel - silky and velvety. Read more »

Yeyo Blanco

From TequilaGringo: Yeyo is a tequila brand with attitude.  Their advertising is filled with images of hunky guys drinking the way you're supposed to drink.  So we set out to see if the marketing was all hype or if there was a product behind it.  Here's the deal:  The nose on this blanco is a delicious agave, just as it should be.  With it's medium heat, we all decided that we really really liked the smell of this one.  OK.  Great start.  Mouthfeel was velvety, a very nice velvety that we enjoyed immensely.  On taste, initially there's a citrus to it with a trace of pepper, but really it has a lot of agave.  It's a very smooth tequila on top of it all. Delicious, complex blanco

From TequilaGringo: The nose on this blanco was earthy/clove-y, slightly smokey.  Usually it's the lowland tequilas that have more earthy tones, so this surprised us a bit.  On taste, we found it to posses a true agave flavor, with perhaps a hint of cucumber (but oh so slight).  We found it to have a really full bodied, flavorful taste - particularly for a blanco.  Yet it's also a mild tequila, with low heat, and it's exceptionally smooth.  The mouthfeel was velvety.  8 stars.

Just good, straight-up tequila. How we like it.

From TequilaGringo: When Fernando Hernandez of Real de Mexico sent us his blanco and his repo, we were happy.  (It's fair to say we get happy with each and every bottle that comes in the mail, wouldn't you?) But maybe this was a little different because Fernando had been very nice and a pleasure to work with, and we hoped his tequila would be a good one.  So, we poured it into our Reidel tequila glasses and gave it a whiff.  Light sweet agave and a bit of pepper on nose. Good start on a blanco.  Medium heat. OK.  The flavor?  You know, it was pretty simple, but in a good way.  Sometimes when there's little complexity but you get a good simple agave, that's what you want. The length of the finish was standard. Read more »

Delicious cuadruple destilado blanco

From TequilaGringo: Luna Sueno's blanco offering arrived and it was apparent immediately that these guys know how to make a tequila look really tantalizing.  It comes in a sleek (dare I say, beautiful?) black box.  The bottle is hand blown, which gives it a very authentic feel, and hearkens back to old Mexico, we like that.  We're suckers for that.  Perhaps the most unique quality of Luna Sueno is the quality (we can be witty with our plays on words yes?).  Most tequilas are distilled twice.  We've seen a few triple distilled.  This is the first cuadruple destilado we've come across.  Each distillation removes impurities - two is usually enough but to strive for a fourth is to strive for absolute purity. A nice midland blanco

From Tequila Gringo: We loved the repo offering from Dos Lunas and so were excited to try out the blanco.  Their blanco is from the midlands, and they use 10 year old agaves (8 is a little more common, the extra age means bigger pinas and more time to pick up flavors from the soil or air depending on altitude).  The nose was a sweet agave and fruit.  Upon taste, more of the same.  A nice, smooth, simple blanco.  A soft, almost velvety mouth feel.  Overall, a solid offering. Our socks didn't fly off like they did with the repo- but that's an unfairly high bar.  7 stars, and an easy choice if you're looking at patron as the competitor.

Old School Style, Great Taste

From Tequila Gringo: Here's a great old school tequila.  Stone crushed, just how they used to do it.  Much more laborious than the way most tequilas are made today, but damn if the old way didn't produce a better tequila.  They take  8 yr old agave plants (8-10 is pretty typical) and cook for 33 hours.  Then it ferments for 3 and a half days in wood barrels.  From there, it goes into nice hand blown glass bottles with a pina looking top that's made from ground marble.  Old school looking bottle is perfectly fitting for this production process.  The nose is pretty remarkable for a blanco with some fruit and earth, and we found the taste to be very unique for a blanco as well.  It's a low-land tequila, which nat Read more »

One of the better blancos we've had

From TequilaGringo: Great bottle.  What makes a great bottle you ask? It has guns molded into the back.  As if that's not enough, the cap is heavy, so you can smoothly spin it off with a flick of the thumb.  It pours very nicely.  (It also has markers on the back for each shot worth of booze, but I find them pretty useless.)  The nose of this tequila has a full bodied, sweet agave to it.  Taste follows with more sweet agave, and some very slight hints of black pepper and a hint of vanilla.  Medium/light heat.  Mouth feel is thin.  This is a delicious blanco, wonderfully complex with a finish that seemed to be just about the right length for us.

Nice blanco with an aromatic agave nose

TequilaGringo: This tequila is from the highlands of Jalisco, which usually means a nice big flavor.  But it's not just from the highlands, it's actually from the highest fields there, 6,200 feet!  It's chemical-free and made by Carlos Munoz, the distiller master.  On the nose, we found a delicious light agave, and the taste followed through with more of the same.  A nice soft mouth feel.  Finish was medium heat and brief.  Aromatic comes to mind as we sip this.  A nice, solid tequila

Full flavored blanco

TequilaGringo: Corzo shipped us one of their new 50ml mini-bottles for this one.  They're great little bottles, basically like carrying around a flask.  They look just like the beautiful, modern 750ml ones, simply smaller.  And what's inside is pretty great too.  We must say, we liked this blanco.  The nose was definitely agave, but maybe with a hint of sugar.  Taste held up nicely to the expectations set by the bottle design and nose.  Green pepper.  Agave.  Good level of complexity.  Mouth feel we thought was best described as "soft".  If you're looking for a blanco, we think you should check this one out.  Corzo is easier to find than many tequilas because of their great distributio

It's Not Tequila, and Wow - It's Potent

From TequilaGringo.com     Any tequila afficianado will tell you, for tequila to be Tequila, it has to be made in the Tequila region of Mexico.  In fact, that's actually written into the NAFTA agreement.  It's basically like the difference between Champagne and Sparkling Wine - to count it has to be from the right place.  This stuff is made from the agave plant, but it's made in the Temecula region of Southern California so it's an "Agave Spirit".  They actually had a fight over their original name, Temequila, which was deemed to be too similar to Tequila, and had to back off and call it JB Wagoner.  Read more »
