A bit of sherry in this anejo

From TequilaGringo: We were pretty excited to try this one after enjoying the blanco so much.  Like the repo which is light by repo standards, it's a very light pale yellow for an anejo.  The anejo smells a bit of berry's and a light sherry (no rhyme intended) that mixes well with agave and a light alcohol.  When you sip this one, you'll find a very nice sherry flavor on top of the agave and a long sweet finish.  To go with a killer velvet mouthfeel.  Our tasters really enjoyed this anejo, and found it very unique and easy to sip.  8.6 stars.

Great tequila, but in the shadow of it's blanco brother

From TequilaGringo:  We were a little fired up about this one because we simply love their blanco.  A great blanco doesn't necessarily come out of the barrel great (and vice versa) though.  The time with the wood alters things a lot and sometimes that's for the better, sometimes it's not.  So we knew not to get too nutso about it.  Arette's anejo arrives with a yellow/gold color and has a slight chocolate/caramel to the nose, maybe a little earth.  Smooth, soft, cool mouthfeel. Taste was pretty unique, with a bit of spice, some orange peel and med-high heat. Long, flavorful finish. Oh well, once again a great blanco does not a great anejo make. Read more »

Chocolatey extra anejo

From Tequila Gringo:  Sure it came in a fancy wood box, a nice bottle with a great label, and sure only 624 bottles are produced each year, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be good (but it was). Read more »

Like sherry? Like tequila? You'll love Tres Manos.

From Tequila Gringo: Tres Manos has been on our hit list for a while and we finally got to try some at the Tequila Event at the Winehouse in West LA.  Triple distilled.  Triple filtered.  (Do you get much out of the extra distillation and filter - unclear, but presumably there are fewer contaminants, better purity.)  Barrel info is all on the bottle.  An extra anejo, but it doesn't say it on the label due to some strange ruling it was grandfathered into.  But let's get to the tequila itself.  Very sherry-like (especially on the nose).  The taste continued the sherry theme, but also was somewhat floral and had a delicious peppery finish.  Great stuff.  A 3 yr old tequila at 70 bucks is pretty good value as Read more »

A delicious organic anejo

From TequilaGringo: Tequila Tierras is a newer line of tequilas that is touting the fact that it's organic.  For all you green folks out there (we include ourselves in that bunch) that makes for a pretty good excuse to drink tequila instead of soda during your lunch break.  We really enjoyed their blanco and repo, so we were pleased as punch when they sent their anejo.  The nose on this tequila is full bodied agave, but very low heat, with some butterscotch.  The taste follows with more of what we can best describe as a nice, easy, muted agave with medium heat.  The finish at first seems like it's going to be here and gone, but then an extra flavor arrives at the end, we think it's best described as sea salt.  Mouth feel is Read more »

One of the great tequilas

TequilaGringo.com: Let's just start with, "wow".  We were already huge huge fans of the five year, so we came into this with high hopes.  The bottle is a very similar design to the 5 year, but with silver accents where on the 5 year there's gold.  Each bottle is also numbered and signed in a classy way.  We found that it had a familiar nose, similar to the 5 year.  Taste followed with delicious caramel, perhaps just a bit stronger than the 5 year we'd grown accustomed to (though that of course could simply be the barrel our tequila came from).  The finish, amazingly smooth.  This tequila won the double gold at the 2009 SF Spirit Awards, and with good reason.  Treat yourself to a little something special a Read more »

Delicious tequila with a nice honey flavor

From TequilaGringo: Wow.  We had this in a massive flight, having tried it against many of the other tequilas at the 2008 Expo Tequila in Tijuana and it came out our favorite.  It has a nice hint of honey to it, and finishes amazingly well.  Bad news for all you americans, not available in the US.  You're going to have to overcome silly swine flu fears and get yourself down to MX to pick up a bottle.  We did - it was one of the few we brought back from the Expo! And yes, the bottle top does have one last shot of tequila in it for you.  nice.

A Classic Tequila

TequilaGringo Review:

This tequila is a pale yellow.  Smells of light citrus, honey, and generally sweet.  On tasting it, we picked up a trace of caramel and a generally "tequila" taste that we really like.  It's definitely a complex tequila with a long finish.  Not for the faint of heart though, as it has a medium to high heat.  Ocho claims that their single estate tequilas prove terroir exists in tequila.

A nice, silky tequila

TequilaGringo.com Review:

We found this to be a silky tequila.  It didn't have any bite, and light heat.  A faint wisp of caramel along with honey notes.  More barrel tasting than agave tasting.  We thought it was a great sipping tequila but came up a little short compared to some of our other favorites because it didn't quite have the same level of complexity those others do.

Organic Anejo

From Tequila Gringo:

Picked up agave on the nose.  The first taste brought smoke, and then a surprising after taste of citrus.  We felt it didn't have much random barrel flavor (like vanilla or caramel) for an anejo (depending on your preferences, that can be a good or a bad thing), but if you read their write up - perhaps the flavors you pick up on other tequila's aren't the barrel either!  We did taste a nice wood flavor though.  We liked this tequila, and think it's one to try as you look to figure out which types of tequlias you enjoy most.

Best Thing About it is the Bottle!

From Tequila Gringo:

Light Spice and agave flavors with a medium-high heat are what you get on the taste.  The finish has a heavy alchohol to it, which means a lot of heat.  All in all, not bad, but not on the best list either.

A Little Boring Unfortunately

Tequila Gringo:

We picked up a light taste of smoke.  Medium agave, medium heat, medium finish - really kind of medium everything.  Not our favorite at this price point, but a solid tequila that you won't mind having, particularly if you're used to cheaper stuff.

Solid Tequila with an interesting numbing effect

From Tequila Gringo:

We came in with high hopes after seeing this tequila win the SF Spirit award for Top Anejo, and we didn't find that this quite lived up to those hopes.  We picked up a lot of agave in the taste, perhaps a little honey and some earthiness.  It had a longish finish and what we thought was perhaps a "thicker" feel to it.  Perhaps the most unusual part of this tequila for us was the distinct numbing we felt in our mouth after.  Great tequila for $50, you really can't go wrong with it.
